Hot Tamales are hands down one of the best retro candies of our time! These oval shaped spicy, cinnamon candies were introduced to the world in 1950.

Now a common staple of movie theater candy-case selections, Hot Tamales originated as a way for unused Mike and Ike candies to be saved, packaged and sold to unsuspecting buyers.

Although we’re sure this process does not continue today we do think it was extremely clever of the manufacturers to create a flavor that could mask the original Mike and Ike candy flavor.

Currently Hot Tamales, along with their Mike and Ike counterparts, are manufactured in the United States and retail for around $1.99 a box.

What we want to know is – do Hot Tamales give you a sense of nostalgia, or were you unaware of their long-ago origins?

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written by Frank Baum in 1990 and in 1939 was turned into “The Wizard of Oz” movie directed by Victor Fleming. The movie starred Judy Garland as the 12-year-old Dorothy Gale.
